 Ugly Cases
Author: Chloe

My ugliest, most embarrassing clarinet case entombed an old plastic Bundy. It was a wood-framed, lacquered yellow tweed, clunky wonder, with scuffed chestnut brown leather capping the 2 ends. Not even a shoulder strap. It was so hideous that I tried to hide it under my books as I walked home from school in the 7th and 8th grades (okay, the mid '60s) for fear of being mocked or bullied. And it was so ugly that I almost quit clarinet because of it.

How ugly was (is) your case?

I'm sure it was nowhere near as ugly as the moulded plastic Bundy cases that came after that!

I can only think your clarinet case looked like a smaller version of a Stratocaster/Telecaster case:

You did well to survive learning on a Bundy A bit like me on my B&H Regent. Thinking back your parents probably would have bought you a new case or a used one. It was not easy in the past now we have e bay!

Chris,

I just found one on that secondhand Internet place entitled: Vintage Selmer Bundy Wood Clarinet Bb

Pretty much bright yellow and tweedier than the case you posted. Now imagine it in horrible condition. A beacon of ugliness in the night.

It never occurred to me as a naive 7th grader that you could even GET a replacement case. My parents didn't know about that sort of thing or clarinets in general, and I didn't think to ask. I just figured the case and the clarinet inside it were a permanently bonded pair.

Yes, this is a very lightweight thread, but it is the holiday weekend, after all : )

I always felt bad for kids with ugly cases, especially the plastic Bundy ones (which for some reason I now think are kind of nice, if not attractive...)

For kids (or adults), they should make instrument cases that look like the attched picture. Plexiglass front, LEDs, black ABS, and everything. Imagine your shiny black and silver horn in green LEDs. Better yet, a newly polished METAL clarinet. They can do these cycling multi-color LEDs.. Or have a slot for your iphone, and "sync" it...

If all the clarinet players looked like Transformer / Christmas Trees walking down the hall, imagine the change in the clarinet's coolness factor. "Ooh, I want one of those..."

Chloe - I feel your pain. I have that case too....for my bundy BASS clarinet! Imagine yours...but bigger. It's really bad. one of the latches doesn't work, the leather is peeling off the corners, and it smells pretty musty too.

unsurprisingly, I've been looking at getting (or making) a nicer case for it recently. Annoyingly though it's a one piece instrument which reduces the choice.

The UMI-era moulded plastic cases for Artley, Armstrong and Conn woodwinds were pretty ugly - they were either black or grey.

Corton (Amati) clarinet cases from the '70s were also pretty ugly - they were covered in baby diarrhoea beige fake leather:

It is a pity that there are not so many third party cases for clarinet on the market... Feel so jealous about the violinists who have so many great choices...

The only proper clarinet cases that I personally know of are made by BAM and ProTech. I prefer the BAM cases for the foam they use.
