 Til Eulenspiegel

Good afternoon.

In my Hadcock e flat excerpt book, Til Eulenspiegel. 4th measure of rehearsal 37, the 8th notes are (e flat clarinet) a, b flat, a, c, a sharp, and what should be a b flat, (since the accidental carries through the bar). The last 2 notes are therefore two spellings of the same note. Everything I have checked (score, and both D and e flat parts (Aibl 1896 all from IMSLP) agree with the Hadcock book. Is this correct? Can't really tell from the other parts.

Thanks.

All the other instruments have either concert D,F, or A on the last eighth of the measure. It appears that the eefer should have a B natural and the deefer a C natural.

Those are the notes in the D clarinet part. It may be mislabeled in the book (I don't own it).

In any case, my (unauthoritative) Kalmus score from the 1960s and the part in OMCDRL agree with what you've set down. But if you compare the D/Eb clarinet part in that bar to the other instruments in the score, you find that that part is an amalgam of Violin 1 and Violin 2 and also English Horn and Oboe 2. The first four notes of the D clarinet part are in unison with Violin 2 and at an octave above the
English Horn. The last two D clarinet notes of the bar double Violin 1 and Oboe 2 (again at an octave). In those two parts, where there is no (concert) Db on the 2nd eighth note to confuse things, it's clearly a (concert) D natural. There is also D-natural in a number of other parts - both flutes, 1st oboe and 2nd and 3rd trumpets. So, the implied Cb is a misprint and should be C-natural (concert D-natural, B-natural for the Eb clarinet).

I don't have it either but the orignal is in D so perhaps the transposition is in error.
