 E-Flat Clarinet Cover Case/Protection
Author: maiohmai

Greetings!

Does anyone know of a good cover case or a good case with backpack/messenger straps for an R13 E-Flat Clarinet?
I currently have the standard R13 Buffet Case (with the two key inserts and the gold hinges.) I have tried looking for some, but either came up with no results or triple cases (which is slightly out of my reach, price wise, at this time.)
I had thought about trying a zipped tote bag, but wanted to know my options for cases tailored specifically for the instrument.

On the road to a non-collapsing embouchure!

I would have said the ProTec shoulder bag, but the current clarinet bag is not as wide as the previous model which took the Buffet and Selmer Eb cases (and much older Buffet Bb case from the '50s and '60s) easily.

I have a R-13 Eb Clarinet and I have an Altieri Case for it.

It is a great case/instrument protector.

Is there a specific E-flat Altieri Bag or did you opt for the B-flat model? I could not find a E-flat option on the order sheet, so I just wanted to check!
I currently have a Double Trek BAM Case for my A and B-flat so my back is already covered, not looking so much for anything too bulky.

I emailed Alteieri a number of years ago with the same question. They basically said they'd make me one, but it'd be custom/one-off (so probably expensive).

I ended up getting a Marcus Bonna double case that easily fits the Eb and haven't looked back. They're expensive, but the design is amazing and after 7 years it hardly has a scratch on it.

I have a Marcus Bonna triple case Pam Muncy ordered for me a couple of years ago. They might have one in stock, you'll need to call Muncy Winds.
Pull out a credit card, it wasn't exactly cheap. But it works perfectly for me.

I have a very nice Eb with the new leather Buffet case and although it isn't perfectly designed for it, I have an Altieri double-clarinet case cover that A) was designed to fit those old 50's 60's double cases, and B) I added an extra two inches for roominess. It has enough extra room to hold my Eb case in the zipper section easily, or tightly in the Bb section. I look like a turtle, I'm sure, but it carries my clarinets, extra equipment, a tiny fan, and my music. It's held up in heavy-duty use while getting my master's, but I have heard people that have had tearing issues with Altieri.

If price is an issue, the tote bag (look up men's tote bags) or older style large laptop case would work. You know how many of my clarinet/oboe students had "Eureka!" moments when I told them you could fit literally all your music, case, flip folders, water cups, reed cases, etc in an old laptop case?

Anyway, if I ever do end up getting a triple case for some reason, I would get the Lomax humidifying case.

It's cheaper than the Marcus Bonna (also a nice case), but the humidifying aspects are appealing for the traveling clarinetist, or in my case, one who lives in Texas where the humidity oscillates between 100% and 5% every other day. If you live in a cold climate, the Humidipro ULTRA might be a good choice too. (Also by Lomax, but very expensive).

Best of luck!

My R13 Eb finds itself very protected in a Lomax Humidipro case. Total humidity control, holds ambient temperature for hours. Very impressive case, comes with the matching cover. The Best Eb (single) case on the market. Lomax also has double (Bb & A) and triple (Bb, A & Eb) cases.

Bass bags makes a hard/soft shoulder gig bag which fits both the Eb and the Bb....I got two and would sell one if you are interested.

Very portable and very good protection.
