 Polycrystal mouthpieces

I am just wondering as to what makes polycrystal mouthpieces so special, other than being clear, of course haha. I've never played on one before, but I've seen various models from Pyne and other manufacturers. What are the pros and cons of these? Thank you! :)

Thanks,
