Plastic feels smoother and colder to the touch. With a used mouthpiece, an ebonite one usually also has some (slight) discolouration.

About a ligature; the generic metal ones don't have a good fit with all mouthpieces. A wild guess is that the Buffet Crampon silver plated ligature may be a good fit with the Riffault(?) mouthpiece. I prefer the Rovner fabric ligatures, but that is all personal.
