 EVETTE
Author: toffeeman3

I just bought a wooden EVETTE clarinet. I wonder if anyone can shed some light on its history?. it is wooden but I am not sure what type of wood it is?
It has a mouthpiece N4 France? Is it hard rubber is it as good as say a Vandoren?
The wording is just EVETTE in capitals with two leaves underneath in an oval . it only says that Not Evette & Shafer or under licence.
What is this model? I am guessing it is an older version of an E11? Is it as good as an E11?. Does its age have a factor in its value/collectability? How old do you think it is?

Hi, John:

1. The wooden Evette is made out of Grenadilla wood. It's extremely unlikely that you'll encounter an affordable wooden clarinet made out of Cocobolo or Rosewood.

2. Look at the top of the mouthpiece next to the tenon end, directly opposite of the reed table. See if there is a faint "Noblet" inscribed upon it. If so, it could be a good player if the facing isn't damaged or worn. Is it "as good as a Vandoren"? Possibly.

3. We'd need to see photos of your Evette to date it.

4. The Evette is indeed the direct ancestor of the E11. In the time-honoured Buffet tradition, some are better than others and no two are exactly alike. The Evette was built over the span of decades and, unfortunately, there are some Evettes built by the Malerne works that are considered to be rubbish. Again, we'd have to see some pix.

5. You could get much more value for your money at this point by investing in a good mouthpiece, quality reeds, and arranging for some private lessons. You won't go wrong with a brand-new Vandoren 5RV Lyre mouthpiece, Vandoren Traditional reeds, and a Rovner 1R ligature. Most any lessons teacher would be delighted to have you show up with such a setup. Need I say more?

Cheers,
Greg

Hi Greg,

I now have a Vandoren Hard rubber B44 mouthpiece which is the best I have tried so far.

The MP that came with the Evette only says N4 and France

I looked up the serial number of the clarinet and it is 76973 and says made in germany.

I got on their website and the range showed that it was made in 1963

Not sure exactly what i have but it appears that it is in a nice condition apart from some pitting on the keys

What do you think?

Here's what I think...

1. Good on you for getting the B44! Use it all the time, every time. Don't worry about the 5RV Lyre, then--you should be all set for success with the B44. A Rovner 1R ligature is still a good idea.

2. Take all your other mouthpieces and stash them away somewhere in a cool, dry place. When it's time to sell one of your clarinets, supply it with a mouthpiece from this group.

3. Your Evette was built in Germany by the Schreiber works. It's one of "the good ones".

4. Pitting on the keys is always cause for concern. The pitting could be due to a reaction from a former player's body chemistry--or the instrument could have been stored in a corrosive environment, in which case rust could be running roughshod over the rods, springs, screws, and other hardware. That would be very bad news.

I may have the same mouthpiece (currently in a drawer), and from memory I say mine was made by Riffault. If yours was made by Riffault, and the facing and internals are not worn, then it might be a very decent mouthpiece.

Thanks Greg,

I already took your earlier advice and have put the Lade,B&H and one of the Bundys on e bay.

That leaves me with the Evette which was in a bit of a mess like several clarinets I have bought on e bay or in a second hand store. its amazing that some sellers just dont even bother to clean them.
The Evette is in a nice condition apart from the pitting but I manged to get amost of it off so far. Not too worried because I intent to keep it and maybe get it professionaly maintained. There is a small leak which seems to be comming from one of the trill keys but I just renewed the pad so it may need to bed in? I was worried that the second trill tone hole was slightly damaged but does not seem to be leaking.

I will also keep the B12 which is like a stock instrument and in good shape. The Yamaha had a big repair job done on it so is almost unsalable but plays a treat so will keep that as well.

So far I did not notice any improvment from the wooden model but need to sort the leaks first.

The Vandoren only fits the B12 and the Evette (great news it is a good one BTW.
So for the Yamaha I will continue with the 4C.

Reed wise I have had most joy with the Rico 2.5 normal ones, how do you rate them?

Finally I have tried a leather LIG. but prefer the metal type, can you recommend a metal one for me?

Many thanks
John

Regarding Yamaha; my Yamaha outdoors (plastic) clarinet really likes a Portnoy BP02 mouthpiece. For me(!) the intonation of that combination works very well. It also works well with Legere reeds, which I like for outdoors playing too.

Riffault was known for making mouthpieces / blanks for other manufacturers (like Couesnon), so many of their mouthpieces didn't have a brand name on them when leaving the Riffault factory.

Edit: I don't know if yours is a Riffault, but it would not surprise me.

We dont temd to play outdoors in UK as the weather is too bad!

Plastic feels smoother and colder to the touch. With a used mouthpiece, an ebonite one usually also has some (slight) discolouration.

About a ligature; the generic metal ones don't have a good fit with all mouthpieces. A wild guess is that the Buffet Crampon silver plated ligature may be a good fit with the Riffault(?) mouthpiece. I prefer the Rovner fabric ligatures, but that is all personal.

Metal ligature preferences, by me:

1. An older, "correctly" made Bonade inverted
2. Vandoren Optimum, with the "four dots" plate

The N4 is cold and shiny so think it must be plastic. The Vandoern is discoloured and warmer so Hard rubber.
Just finished restoring an old Evette wooden model from 1963, 12 hours to plug leaks in the upper joint now it plays a treat,so happy and can tell the difference from my YCL 23N and B12s for the 1st time. Is the Evette on a par with the E11? doesnt seem to command the same price

Thanks & take care
John

Is that with the front cut out, Marcellus style, or with the full front the way they were manufactured?

John,

"Hi Greg,

This is mistaken. You are looking at the serial list for Buffets. Evette's are different numbers. And if yours says made in Germany, it was made by Shreiber, not Buffet. If an Evette was made by Buffet, it's serial number would begin with a "D". For further information, see the serial number pages on

My Evette is definatly a 1963 german built instrument form Shreiber. Does anyone know where this sits in the heirachy of instruments? It is in good condition. Is it considered equal to an E11/ or better than a plastic B12 for instance?
