Heading off to college in 2 months, never really taken clarinet lessons.. always just took on bass. My HS director/clarinet teacher is moving soon, so I have to work on my own this summer. So i'll be going to the clarinet studio having not played for a teacher for about 3 months. I have to head off to the music store monday for books, she said to get the Hite book I and (the WONDERFUL) baermann (i HATE the baermann books, played it on bass last year). And whatever else catches my eye.... anybody have any other suggestions as to what else i should get? provided they have it anyway. She wants me to just work on technique and then melodic stuff, improving my tone and embouchure. I know pretty much everything i'm doing wrong, its just the matter of fixing it now. How difficult are the Rose etudes? Shes never said anything about them but they seem to be a popular subject here... thoughts?

Get hand in hand with hanon by Buddy De Franco. you can get it from Sheet Music.com right off of the board. Have great summer. Keep tooting.

My favorite books for technique coupled with melodic phrasing and musicality
Hite book 3 The Italian School pretty difficult especially with some of fast paced intervals that are written.
Baerman book 5 very difficult especially at the marked tempos. I read somewhere they were desined to "loosen up" a players' technique.
Lazurus book 2 great all around technical and melodic studies with some core solos at the end.
The Hite book 1 are the French studies which include the Rose etudes. I think thier true difficulty is in playing them with beauty and musically more so than the raw technique you need to get the notes out.
Have fun I've been known to stop and take a lunch break when I go to Pattelsons to pickout music.
