I just noticed this serial number on an R13. It was originally purchased in 1973:

According to the serial number chart, it was manufactured in (probably late) 1972, so it sounds likely that it was purchased in 1973 indeed. That is a nice serial number indeed :-)
(My Buffet Crampon "Continentale" Bb clarinet is also made in 1972, and is a great instrument)

I wish more manufacturers did this. Tom Ridenour does this for most of his clarinets but as far as I know no other manufacturers do.

I believe Guy Chadash has a similar system where the serial # reflects the date of manufacture
