today i started with a new private teacher, who was amazed by how old and well-cared for my clarinet is (1936 buffet). After yelling at me for not using cork grease much (it saves time!), he started cracking up while looking at the pads. the pad for the lower register d key, or higher register a key, had fallen out earlier, and i had just stuck it back in. turns out that i had put it in upside down! he was amazed that i had managed to get it to play with an upside down pad...i'm kind of amazed at my own stupidity, too. he told me to get the advanced rubank book...have any of you guys used it before? do you people think it's a challenging enough book?

Cute story. It is indeed amazing that it plays. What do you plan to do about the inverted pad?

The Rubank Advanced Volumes are excellent. This is a two volume set. It works you through all the major and minor keys, melodic studies, ornaments and so on. Naturally as you go through it, it gets harder and harder.
