i'm not sure what piece would be best for an audition. Concerto 3 by stamitz, arabesques by jeanjean, or concertino by weber

Put it into context for us: Middle school, high school, college (undergrad), graduate school, etc?

What kind of audition? What is this for?

FWIW - Stamitz 3 - this is suitable for an 8th grade student.

For high school, they're all good. The key is to choose the one that you can play the best, not necessarily the one that sounds the hardest or the most impressive.

If I were judging, I'd much rather hear a piece played musically and technically clean than played with little interest and with lots of technical errors. You won't get points for picking a tough piece, but not executing it well.

(Paul, you must have some great 8th-grade players if they can pull off the Stamitz well!)

Stamitz is for anyone who's ready for it - whenever they're ready for it. Why call it an 8th grade piece?? I have 7th graders in my studio who can handle it and seniors who couldn't (other than the second movement).

The JeanJean seems to esoteric to me for some reason for this audition. Stamitz is definitely good stuff. But at the end of the day, I vote for Weber hands down. It's got it all. Concertino has the opportunity to be very musical and has good showy technical stuff.

The problem is, if I play concertino, I can only play a portion of it in the concert. But if I play stamitz, I will be able to play all of it.

"if I play concertino, I can only play a portion of it in the concert. But if I play stamitz, I will be able to play all of it."

Why? The Stamitz takes longer, ~14 min vs Weber ~10 min.

Im only doing movement 1, weber will be split into 3 sections, introduction slow and theme. then variation 1 and 2. then lento and allegro, because so many people audition with it. its such a toss up and I cant decide

I feel if I play the weber well, my chair will be better than the stamitz played well but I only would be able to play a fraction of the solo as opposed to the full stamitz movt 1.

Please clarify:
If you pick Concertino, you get to choose which section you can audition with? Or can you mix it the sections to audition (which I get the feeling you can't).
It'd be great to play the opening, then Variation I and II. Or Into, Var II, then the 6/8 Allegro.

I play the full piece for the audition, but they choose what section I would play for the recital. if I do stamitz I play the full piece for the audition and full piece for the recital
