Does anybody know of any songs that are similar, in style and groove, to Frenesi by Artie Shaw? I recently learned it by ear and I just love playing it and want to learn more songs like it

Fun song!

I'm looking forward to what others recommend. I'm not quite sure how to answer your question.

To me, it's 1930s/40s pop music (much of Bing Crosby, Fred Astaire, Andrew Sisters, Boswell Sisters, swing tunes would fit); I'm not sure how specific of an answer you're looking for though. If you're playing by ear, style and groove is something you get to apply as you wish!

- that's a great and exciting place to be! Good luck in your search!

Thanks for the feedback. I've only been playing clarinet about 4 years and I've learned just about every Benny Goodman solo I can find so I've kind of turned to Artie Shaw for new tunes to learn. The thing I love about Shaw is his incredible mastery of the instrument and how seamlessly he works modal changes into his playing. So I guess I'm looking more specifically for other songs by Shaw that sound similar to Frenesi, particularly the clarinet part.

Hi again Taran -

I was hoping you'd hear from some others on this topic, as I'm terrible at this sort of thing. Do you own any Artie Shaw albums? Frenesi is rather unique, so I'm not sure I could peg another Artie tune to the same style and groove. Begin the Beguine has some quirkiness to it.

(Only playing for four years and already having learned just about every Benny Goodman solo?! Wow - that's impressive!)

If you're a fan of innovative play on the chords - you might enjoy Tim Laughlin too.

You could try Shaw's "Carioca" or "Man from Mars".

"Carioca" and "Temptation" are both good tunes with Latin beats. "Begin the Beguine" and "Frenesi" are in a class of their own.

Artie's solo on Stardust is a must, in my opinion.
