Vandoren Boxes

I've noticed that during the last few years, the location from where i purchase vandoren boxes correlate with the quality of reeds. For example, a local store here in ** sell V12 for about 18 a box. but there reeds are absolutley great, when i buy them from a certain someone one on the northern east coast in great quantities, the reeds are pretty shitty. Im thinking....mebbe the vandoren company distributes aged reeds to certain priority stores? i don't know, just a thought. If you have any CONCRETE evidence to answer my question, i would like to hear it.

Why don't you write and ask them? Asking here is just a waste of time - unless someone is an employee or recipient and gives their name any answer you get would be suspicious at best.

Location will change how a reed plays. I live in Michigan and brought my clarinets on vacation with me to Florida. An imediate difference was noticed with my reeds. Getting back from Florida I noticed my reeds played the same as before.

Well.....I have noticed the same thing about where I buy reeds and how they play. When I but reeds from my local, in town guy(V12) they play like crud.....however whenever i but reeds from, well lets say an unnamed music company in the Carolinas, the reeds are usually great, more good to a box. Then when I buy from a certain unnamed company in the chicago area the reeds are again not very good quality.
I have read about the possible "target selling" of vandoren reeds, mouthpieces, etc, but have found no real case for this.....however in my years of clarinet playing, I have found many odd coinsidences in my purchases.......the world may never know!!!!!

Climate/elevation affects cane, how it plays and its consistency, and that also goes for the shipping process...say 30,000+ feet via airmail. Anyone who travels and plays a lot knows that, especially those in higher elevations like Colorado. People who live there routinely play 1/2 to 1 full size softer regardless of their setups. As far as Vandoren is concerned, outside of quality control during manufacturing I personally don't believe there's any "market targeting" or hanky-panky going on. If that were true the finest players in the world and/or those in the tightest circles would all be in on it and word would eventually leak. Of course, no one can prove that anymore than they can prove OJ really did it. I've been honking on V-12 since they first came out and whether I purchase from Muncy, Washington, WW&BW, Brannens or Zapf’s, I normally get TWO "recital quality" reeds per box and the rest goes in the garbage no matter how much carpentering.

Climatizing the reed from the north coast at your location may change the result. At least three months-2 years.
