 CD review (x3)

Thought I would offer my opinion of 3 CD's I got in the mail this week.
(Don't know if my opinion is even worth 2 cents, but I would love to hear your opinions of these CD if you have heard them...)

1. A Song For George Lewis (by Dr. Michael White)
A fantastic tribute to George Lewis, with two original songs. I love this one.
New Orleans jazz WITH FEELING. Great disk!

2. Clarinet Blue (by Bobby Gordon and Dave McKenna)
Performed for the most part with clarinet, piano, and a bass and rhythm section.
Beautiful and intimate. So beautiful it always carries me away. So intimate I feel like I have clarinet spit on my shoe after I listen. : )

3. The Five Seasons (by Eddie Daniels)
No doubt he has tone and talent. But I wish he had stuck to Vivaldi, or to his own bop (?). As it is, this one feels like E.D. just can't find a place to land. There are some fhenominal passages and incredible riffs, but in the end the style shifts are frequently just to jarring for me.

I invite your opinions.

About the 5 Seasons CD of Eddie Daniels... I studied with Eddie, and from personal experience I can tell you he knows exactly what he's doing. I know the style shifts you refer to might be too jarring for some, but I dig it. Check out his new CD Swing Low, Sweet Clarinet. Great stuff.

Upon listening to ED's "Swing Low, Sweet Clarinet" CD, he imediatley became an Icon for me -- wow! what range (if that's a good term). "Swing, Swing, Swing" is all it can be with him playing it. I recently picked up his CD, "Beautiful Love" and although you can't knock his playing, I was not as excited as I wanted to about this one.

I'll have to try the other CD's you've mentioned. If you're into "big band" jazz sounds, do get ED's "Swing Low, Sweet Clarinet", though.
