OT: minimal acceptable attire for concert audience
Author: Dan Oberlin 2017

My wife and I are going to be in San Francisco for a day and would like to go to a San Francisco Symphony concert in the evening. Our activities earlier in the day are not compatible with getting too dressed up, and there's a logistical constraint which prevents our changing before the concert. Can anyone shed some light on the low end of acceptable attire for a symphony concert these days?

I've seen audience members in Philadelphia wearing jeans and T-shirts at concerts. It may depend on where you're sitting whether you'd feel self-conscious if you're really dressing down, but you wouldn't be completely alone in jeans.

I gave up a tie and jacket years ago because I started to feel very over-dressed in the mid-level seats we buy (and it was uncomfortably warm to wear the jacket for two hours in either the Academy of Music or Verizon Hall), but a nice sport shirt and basic casual pants (black or brown for me) won't be out of place.

Even if it's not opening night, bare feet are a no-no :). Many men wear suits or sports coats but plenty of folks 'come as you are'.

The most "dressed-down" I've ever been was dark skinny jeans and boots with a blouse...and I felt underdressed. I've always worn at least slacks since then.

I always wear dress pants and shirt and a sport jacket, at least (usually a tie) out of respect for the performers, not so much to fit in with the audience.

In fact, in this area at least, jeans are the usual rather than the exception, so I usually stand out, but I can take it.

Shorts, flip flops and a Tee. OK, someone might do that but here in Baltimore people wear just about anything else for a classial type concert. Any decent looking pants and a decent shirt are fine these days. I can't speak for SF but not too many people dress up anymore for concerts. It's all over the place. Just look decent. Actually even good looking jeans are fine these days.

Flipflops I would not advise, but everything else fine

''...a ball cap and jockstrap,...''

Surely, these are one and the same thing? [grin]
