 Low C on a Contra
Author: mtom

Hi, I have a Rosewood Selmer low C contra I am renting from my school. The low D comes out fantastically, but once I hit the banana-shaped key with my right thumb, the sound doesn't really come out great. Its more of a hum and like a throat vibration than an actual sound the low D makes. I use a Selmer C* and Vandoren traditional 3s. Is this issue from myself, and if so, how can I correct it?

It sounds remarkably like a seating or regulation problem at the bottom end of your instrument.
Get a tech to quickly check or as a minimum have someone use a feeler under the lowest pads to check the firmness of seal whilst you finger that low C.

What about C#?

You can have someone physically close the lowest tone holes, or try to use your legs to close them, and see if that makes it sound ok. If it does, it's probably some adjustment issue. If it still doesn't, it's probably still an adjustment issue.

Try and fill a balloon with air inside the bell and then blow through the neck. Have a friend locate the leak(s).

The low Cs on the selmer contras is a very weak note because th bell is so disproportionatelu long. The note simply does not resonate well. It is a terrible knote.
