Here's my specific question: I'm doing "Victor's Tale" with my local (alma mater) HS next month. I want to avoid a full on tux (too hot in South Texas) and frankly the dress is too formal. At the same time, I want to avoid generic pit orchestra all black. What have you guys seen the pros wear in less formal situations playing solos. I was considering something (tasteful) to reflect the school's colors, navy blue...the rest of the band is in all black. Perhaps a simple button down with slacks (business attire?). I'm comfortable, but not too casual.
What have you guys worn or seen as the new norm. It appears dress codes are relaxing. Perhaps to make the music more assessable for everyone. Thoughts?

What kind of black shirts are the men in the Wind Ensemble wearing? Turtle necks? Full button fronts? Golf type polo shirts (with buttons at the top)? Something else? Short or long sleeves?
Are they wearing tux pants (with a black stripe down the outside seams) or just black slacks?
I'd be inclined to wear some color, not black, on top. Probably a basic-colored solid, not a pattern or a really flaming color. I wouldn't want to be less "dressed-up" than the band members. But I don't know what the "new norm" would be, if one exists. What is the band's director wearing?

Wasn't Victor wearing a dark brown suit with light brown shoes and tie? Why not dress like him?

In the summer months, instead of tuxedos, we went with black dress shirts and khaki slacks in one of my chamber orchestras. (Black belts and black shoes)

Sort of like the Simon Rattle mandarin collar approach, but haven't found them easily available.

I performed the piece in an overcoat, walking through the crowd to the stage, pulled out the clarinet from a suitcase.
