I'm looking for either a FHRED or a BHOB for my 89 year old dad, who is very interested in playing his clarinet again. I'm looking for a used one - new are very expensive! Thank you!

The maker of FHRED went out of business a number of years ago. BHOB is a similar apparatus. It hasn't been mentioned recently, but as I recall, it wasn't outrageously expensive.

However, I think your first source of help should be an occupational or physical therapist who specializes in wind instrument players, who can evaluate your dad's strengths and limitations and recommend both hardware changes and exercises.

While I was recovering from a shoulder injury, my clarinet teacher created this temporary version of a FHRED for me (he used the FHRED I had for an English Horn as the basis). The clip portion clips onto the thumb rest and the stopper next to it rests against the clarinet. The linkage at the bottom end allows you to adjust the height. The bottom end rests on the chair you are sitting on and the whole thing takes the weight off your thumb and arm. It worked very well.

I guess I'm not able to send the photo. Perhaps it's helpful just to know that if you, or some one you know is handy, it's possible to make a FHRED-like device. The tricky part was finding a way to attach it to the clarinet, since it doesn't have a ring like an English Horn. My teacher used an alligator clip (the black ones, used to bundle thicker stacks of paper), threading one end of the part you squeeze through the metal post of the device and allowing the other end free, so that you can open and close the clip, but it is still firmly attached to the post. The alligator clip is attached about 1 inch below the top end of the post. The top end of the post has a rubber stopper that rests against the clarinet. The rest of the device is essentially a long threaded rod, with an oval-shaped linkage to another threaded rod (this allows you to adjust the height) and, at the very bottom, a black rubber cap so the post grips the chair it rests against when in use. I hope that helps!
