Leblanc Bass Clarinet out of tune
Author: mtom

Hi, I recently recieved a wooden 2-part body LeBlanc Bass Clarinet with a serial # 14991 (there is a '33' engraved in the metal right below the hole for the octave key). In the lower register, and most of the time the lower clarion, is in tune. I encounter issues going past the high G. The notes are horridly flat, almost like a quarter tone. Are there suggestions to help fix this, or is it just my mouth adjusting to the new horn. I know for certain that the instrument had been sitting in some dry basement for over 10 years at least.

(I noticed a leak on the 1 and 1 Eb and Bb. The post holding up the rod has become disconnected from the body (near the mid joint), and it can be remedied by just pushing it back into place.)

Does it have a double-venting register mechanism? Is it working properly?

From your description it sounds like the instrument needs some TLC. Hard to diagnose intonation issues if the instrument is out of adjustment and/or not sealing properly.

Hi, it is a single-vent instrument, and prior to me playing it, my tech went through and replaced 75% of all of the pads, so I assume hr checked for leaks.

Maybe the register vent needs to be cleaned out.
Or perhaps not enough venting on the register vent (e.g. pad too thick, or pad cup too close to the hole)

I have played on some of these sturdy old Leblanc bass clarinets in the past. I cannot remember one with the problems that you describe.

I would be glad to look it over at no charge if you want to send it to me. Maybe I can find the cause. Let me know.

That's a generous offer -- and as others on the board will attest -- Walter knows what he's doing.

Hi Walter, thank you for your great offer, but I cannot send it out for I need the instrument for our school's musical. I had noticed something very interesting. On very dry days, the instrument is always out of tune all over the place on all registers, but on very humid days, it is only out on the upper clarion. Would anybody have an idea?

You may have a crack that opens on dry days but seals when the humidity's up.

Sorry about that, it is

Oddly enough, the altissimo register is in tune.
