Recently I bought a wood Bundy on EBay. The price was pocket change, and when it arrived it looked like a piece of firewood covered with verdigris. It cleaned up amazingly well and after a repad, recork and some TLC it looks as good as it ever did. Curiously, it has a plateau key on the thumb hole, sealed with a cork pad. Apart from that its stock standard. I'm amazed at how well-built it is, certainly a bit further up the food chain than the plastic Bundy. With my Fobes SF CF+ it tunes as well as any instrument I've ever tested. Altogether a pleasant surprise. Can anybody shed any light on the plateau thumb key? I've never seen a plateau key in isolation like this.

Selmer briefly offered a Bundy with the Mazzeo throat Bb mechanism. It also had a left thumb plate and a straight conical bell. Some people removed the Bb mechanism to avoid the changes in fingering, but signs of its presence should be visible on various keys.

The plateau could be replaced with a standard ring. But I, for one, am not sure a plateau cover on the thumb would be a bad thing. Failure to keep the thumb hole completely covered when your left hand is moving around in technical work is a major cause of squeaks for both young students and many of us older players with stiffer fingers.

Vito/Holton also offered similar clarinets with plateau thumbplate and RH3 fingerplate for players with smaller hands. Maybe a LH3 fingerplate as well.

Tony, how old is that Bundy?
I have an old Bundy Alto Clarinet (bought in Woodstock NY 2-3 years before Woodstock became famous for that event")
This Bundy is marked as "made in France" and has a proper double octave mechanism.
So maybe you have a French made instrument.

This is a soprano clarinet, serial number is 82083 marked on the upper joint only. I suspect that the bell is Bakelite and it's marked Selmer USA. It tunes and plays well with a Selmer HS*.
