The memorial article by Ben Ratliff in the NYT shortly after his death suggests he was already playing tenor dominantly by the time he was in Bloomington. The article also says he switched to pre-med after a brief time in the IU School of Music, but of course left by the time he was 19.
I've heard various stories about what he supposedly did or didn't do at IU (I lived in Bloomington for five years in the late '90s). Somebody ought to check whatever student records there are and set everything straight. It's an interesting story, but seems pretty nebulous.
Here's Ratliff's article: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/01/14/nyregion/14brecker.html
