 Michael Brecker clarinet teacher IU?
Author: Ananelso

Hey all,

I'm a current sax/clarinet student at Indiana University and wondering if any of you know who Michael Breckers teacher was when he was there? Just curious to know as a big Brecker fan.

Thanks,
Ana

If I remember correctly, he only studied at IU for a year or so. If his study was in the classical department, it must have been Eugene Rousseau, right? I do know that Brecker, and Dave Liebman as well, studied rather extensively with Joe Allard in NYC.

Hey, yup you're right I know he wasn't there very long before NYC...Rosseau was just doing sax though I thought? Just curious since I'm in the clarinet department there...I can ask around too. Wonder how his clarinet chops were :)

I know he actually ended up doing clarinet there for a year which is pretty crazy.

Oh wow, he had switched to saxophone much earlier; didn't know that he did any clarinet after grade school. But toward the end of his life, he was studying quite a bit of classical saxophone up here in NYC. So it fits with his personality.

If he was a clarinet major, it would have been Earl Bates, Bernard Portnoy, or Henry Gulick. If he was a woodwinds major it could also have been a random graduate assistant If he was a sax major who also studied clarinet it would probably have been a grad assistant.

The memorial article by Ben Ratliff in the NYT shortly after his death suggests he was already playing tenor dominantly by the time he was in Bloomington. The article also says he switched to pre-med after a brief time in the IU School of Music, but of course left by the time he was 19.

I've heard various stories about what he supposedly did or didn't do at IU (I lived in Bloomington for five years in the late '90s). Somebody ought to check whatever student records there are and set everything straight. It's an interesting story, but seems pretty nebulous.

Here's Ratliff's article: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/01/14/nyregion/14brecker.html

Yeah, I can't imagine Brecker, 2 years prior to his Dreams recordings, studying with some random grad assistant--haha. Would be interesting to see if there's any truth to the IU thing.

My understanding from articles and interviews had always been that he played clarinet as a young child, around 7 and switched to alto sax a few years later and tenor by the time he was in HS.

According to this article:

He studied with Leon Lester in Philadelphia. His page on Wikipedia also has some info.
