 Sherman Friedland, 1933-2017
Author: clarinetguy 2017

I just discovered that Sherman Friedland passed away on January 26. Perhaps someone posted this information, but I don't recall reading anything here.

I never met him or heard him play, but I enjoyed reading his blog (even though I sometimes disagreed with him). He always had interesting advice, and his stories were often quite entertaining. He was always patient with those who wrote to him, and he tried to be encouraging and helpful.

Sherman Friedland will be missed.

That's very sad. I loved browsing around "Clarinet Corner" and Mr. Friedland always made me feel welcome.

Thank you for posting.
I'm very sorry to read that. He was a very nice gentleman and a great clarinet player (I have one of his CDs, which he sent me).

Sherman always gave excellent advice. He kept his blog going well beyond what anyone else would do. What resilience.

He will be missed.

That's really sad news - he told me a lot about Gino Cioffi who I previously knew very little about.

R.I.P. Mr. Friedland.

I never met him, but it was nice to have that web presence of a Cioffi student, and his blog was quite groundbreaking for the amount of information, opinion, and interaction with readers. During its heyday it must have been one of the most popular resources for clarinetists on the web, and I'm sure opened minds to new perspectives.

GBK and Mark,

Is there some way we could find out the status of his blog. There is a tremendous amount of priceless information there that should be preserved in some way.

I'd be willing to share any costs incurred in maintaining Sherman's site. Perhaps there are also others.

Could you contact his wife, Linda or another member of the family?

Sherman was a great guy & fountain of knowledge! He will be missed by all who knew him, may his memory be a blessing. RIP, my friend.
For those who haven't yet heard,
Laura Flax a great NYC clarinetist & former Principle Clarinetist with the NYC Opera & the American Symphony Orchestra, passed away a few days ago. She will be missed.

This has got me looking at Sherman Friedland’s Clarinet Corner again. Really enjoyable reading. The archive goes way back to 2004. I've bookmarked it and hope that it stays on the internet for a while yet .
