Hello BBoard. Sorry for the non-clarinet question. Can one of our doublers please let me know which Legere Reed is a good match for a Meyer 6M alto sax mouthpiece? First time playing alto in the pit. Thanks, much appreciated.

With a 7M, I used a 2 1/4 Legere' Signature. This is a little soft on a Selmer C* so
may want a 2 1/2 or 2 3/4.

Meyer 5m alto here. I think a 2.5-2.75 works good on it. I'd probably go about the same on a 6m.

I'm curious, though, apart from the strength, what cut regular doublers recommend for the kind of playing you'd normally encounter in a typical pit book. I don't know what kind of show AAAClarinet is going to be playing, but Légère makes three different styles of alto reeds. Which one seems most appropriate for pit work or what would be the trade-offs among them?

I do a lot of Pit work. My Alto piece is a Custom Morgan 7M that Ralph made for me, long ago. In Meyer terms, that would be an old New-York Meyer 5. In newer Meyer terms, probably a 6 or 7. I was playing Alexander Superial 3.5, but am quite happy with the Legere Signature 2.5 (also pack 2-1/4).

AAA Clarinet, now I am curious. What version of Pippin has a book with alto? Didn't think there were saxes in any of the Pippin reed books.

I played 1st clarinet a few years ago for a production of the (I think) 2007 revision of Oklahoma. It had a couple of lines of tenor sax (not in the original) in it and the intro to People Will Say We're In Love (originally for Bb clarinet in the chalumeau) was instead written for bass clarinet - written an octave higher, so it sounded exactly the same pitches as the original (which fit perfectly well on a Bb clarinet). It was the only bass clarinet in the book. I can't think of any other reason those extras were added except that the Broadway player got doubling fees for them.

I should have waited until I had the book in hand. The contractor sent me the wrong list of instruments. I will be playing clarinet, flute, alto flute and recorders. Oh well, I will need a Legere for alto eventually. Thanks all.

Karl - I'm sure they just preferred the special timbre of the bass clarinet, LOL ;-) I've only played the original scoring of Oklahoma, but I have run across a few books like that. I remember Young Frankenstein had something like 9 measures of flute, all in one song. And, as it turned out, in the production I played those bars were eliminated as part of a choreography cut.
AAAClarinet - That sounds right. Have fun with the show!
