I paid what I considered to be a reasonable amount. It was close to what two other techs quoted and I felt it was worth it because of what Guy said he could do. My R13 now plays much better than it did when it was new.
To be perfectly honest, I learned on a Yamaha clarinet and had a reasonably nice 650. I bought the R13 because everyone said it was the best - only to be disappointed with how inconsistent it played.
I shelved it, went back to the 650 for a while, then focused my attention on the saxophone. But last year I decided to pick up the clarinet again and knew I had to do something with that R13. I was working in NYC for a few weeks and learned about Guy's shop.
I called and he and I talked for almost an hour. It was a great conversation and I learned a lot about the newer clarinets from him. I sent the horn to him, he called a couple days later, told me what it would take to fix, and I got a wonderful horn back the following week.
