 Eveytte and Schaffer, buffett
Author: tkillian

Well, my post got deleted because a moderator thought I was trying to sell it.
Tomorrow mom and dad and 8th grade students are coming over and I'm giving this refurbished clarinet that a professional played and said "this is as good/better than myE-12"

FWIW, as I remember Evette & Schaeffer was designated as E-13, a level above the Evette lines E-11 and E-12. That's off the top of my head, so may be wrong. If true, it *should* be better, if only marginally, than an E-12.

Those are very powerful emotions to feel towards your clarinet xD

Her parents and I had a great conversation today. I gave the eveytte and Schaffer k series for her to use indefinitely. ..she is playing on a nice Yamaha 400 Advantage, which is wood and a nice instrument itself...but I hear a huge difference in tone color...

Anyone familiar with the ycl-400? Any ideas on why I hear the difference? Those yamaha have some nice features and it doesn't seem that far off from the Evette & Schaffer. ..

I'm still learning and trying to gain wisdom/insight from you all.

I've learned a lot here already that is helping be a more effective teacher.

Hah, that does look kind of weird now that you mention. Should have said, I started her in 4th grade and she is in 8th...so 5 years...kind of like a daughter to me...you know....so I'm just wanting to do best I can

As I understand the Yamaha nomenclature, the YCL400 is the same instrument as the 450, but packaged differently for a different market. I've always thought that the 450 is one of the great bargains of the clarinet world. They play far better than their price would suggest.

Are you sure the Evette & Schaeffer is actually a better clarinet than the YCL 400? Could some maintenance on the Yamaha improve things at that end?

The Yamaha has already been worked on. It's in great shape. My Evette was totally overhauled with new pads, corks, cleaned, oiled.by the woodwind specialist in Ithaca who repairs faculty and student clarinets for Ithaca college school of music.
My student took it home and made 5 comparison videos. ..same excerpts. ..the Evette is noticeably warmer, focused and darker, especially noticeable in altissimo and Chalumeau. The Throat Tones, Clarion are the closest. She didn’t hear a big difference (8th grader) but mom heard it.
Don't get me wrong , that yamaha is great, I'm just being picky. Her Yamaha seems shrilly and the tone is very spread and I hear a lot of upper harmonis vs. Evette the fundamental is really cutting through...the tone color is a lot more pleasing and for lack of words more "mature and refined"?
I like the darker richer tone, someone else might hear something different. Again I had a friend who has m.m. in clarinet performance play it and said it was very close to her R13 and as good or better than her E-11.
