 Can you identify this?

Any ideas about this plateau that is very long in comparison to the total length of the barrel plus mouthpiece?

Low Eb probably - haven't seem one like that before. Thought maybe Italian (?)

It looks German to me.

I'll measure my full Boehm Bb to see how that compares - bear in mind the overall pitch as well as barrel and bell lengths are massively variable between makers so there could be up to a 10mm difference (if not more).

My Selmer CT full Boehm is 708mm or 27⅞" assembled when measured from mouthpiece tip to bell.

Your clarinet is a plateaux full Boehm which is very rare.

I would definitely remove the old reed knife and cleaning rod/mop from the lid compartment!

Having these items needlessly bang around against a historic instrument is poor stewardship.

It looks German or Czech to me. It strikes me as very odd that someone went through all the trouble of building this without putting a maker's mark on it.

Not sure I can identify this clarinet either, but I have also seen it in the catalogue where its for sale. They say its 27.5" long. Being in one piece I had wondered if it were a C or a small Eb, but obviously not if it's that long.

I think its an intruiguing instrument in that it is all in one section bar the bell and the barrell and mouthpiece.

What I'd like to know is if you have an extra key on the right hand bottom levers like this instrument, what does the low Eb play as in the upper register, over the break or is it only for low Eb?

The case is very much like my Kohlert Graslitz oboe case.

Could it be a high-pitch Bb? At one point I also had a one-piece full-boehm as well, so that was my first thought. However, 27.5" sounds short with that low Eb on there.

There are naysayers, but the low Eb fingering plus the register key will come out as a Bb. It's a decent note on some instruments.

It's either built to 442-444Hz or the bell and barrel are significantly shorter than those on a Selmer CT. Both barrels and bells aren't all a standard length. It's around a quarter inch difference in length compared to my CT full Boehm.

With regard to full Boehm instruments my 1954 Selmer Centred Tone instrument [P95xx] measures 705mm/27.5" overall with a Vandoren B45 mouthpiece as best I can measure.

Bassett [above] queried: "What I'd like to know is if you have an extra key on the right hand bottom levers like this instrument, what does the low Eb play as in the upper register, over the break or is it only for low Eb?"

I was intrigued and found, to my surprise, that the fingering closest to being in tune for Bb 'over the break" was, in fact the "long" fingering using the low Eb key. It was slightly sharp. The other two 'normal' fingerings I commonly use for Bb were both relatively more sharp.

By the way, does any one know of a manufacturer who makes a replacement case for full Boehm Bb clarinets? My old case is a disaster waiting to happen.

My CT also has gold-plated keys. Was this common?

Further to my previous post: I remeasured my Selmer CT with a one metre steel ruler instead of a retractible tape measure. It measures [with mouth piece] 706mm/27 13/16".

My apologies for my error,

Jim

Amati make single cases for full Boehms, but they don't seem to be offering full Boehm Bb clarinets anymore. So check with them or an Amati agent to see if they can get hold of one for you (contact Richard Craig as he could get either one through Howarth or directly from Amati).

I bought two of them for a couple of Series 9 full Boehm Bbs I have. They're fairly large cases and have a big accessories compartment and a lid flap.

Chris,

Thank you for your kind response. I will search locally for a vendor, or failing a local supplier, purchase from over seas.

Jim.
