I sold a clarinet on Ebay. Nice older Vito. I replaced all the pads and key corks. Replaced a tenon cork, and cleaned it up. Basically, an overhaul.
It was leak and play tested. All good to go.
Sold it on Ebay, buyer got a steal at $99.
Now he is demanding a refund, saying the pads were bad, black and one was missing. Total BS. He is saying the item was not as described.
He want's a refund AND doesn't want to send it back.
Ebay is forcing me to refund him since it was 'not as described' based solely on the buyer saying so.
So I'm out the sale, the shipping, and don't have the clarinet back!
To top it all off, the buyer is lying.
Thanks Ebay! Selling strictly on Reverb from now on and closing my Ebay and PayPal accounts.

Why can he get a full refund without sending the clarinet back?

I think you're stuck with having to give him a refund, but I wouldn't give it to him until the instrument has been returned, and I'd dispute it if it wasn't in the same condition as when you sent it out. I've successfully negotiated with EBay before when a customer tried it on.

Did you check/compare serial numbers?
There are some "mass buyers" out there who occasionally get lost in all the packages they get and misattribute sellers... <eyeroll>

I am in a dispute on eBay right this second about a flute. eBay required me go to a repair shop and have it evaluated, and the evaluation has to match the description with serial numbers. You should ask for that and check and make sure they're not switching clarinets on you. Also, I am required to return the flute if I win.
This smells fishy to me.

Ebay already pulled the refund from my PayPal account, and the buyer has not sent the clarinet back. He is saying he want's the refund to have it repaired locally.
I am talking to Ebay about this and with any luck they will reverse the refund but I'm not hopeful.
I asked for a picture of the clarinet that clearly shows the issue as well as the serial number. Nothing yet.
It just smells wrong to me. I'd never send out a horn in the condition he is describing.

Usually Paypal holds the funds in escrow until the buyer sends the instrument back to you. Once you receive the clarinet you also have the option to give back a partial refund IF you find that it was not returned in like condition. It may be some work on your end, but I've learned it's not worth the hassle. I just accept the returns and list again.
