Have you noticed that most successful clarient players have a belly? Musicans also.....Why is that? Wat correlation do beer bellies have with clarinet playing?

I certainly hope it has NO CORRELATION! I have always kind of thought that it would be better for people to be in shape than to have disgusting beer bellys?

So much for the starving musician thing.
I guess they're just thirsty.

a few thoughts on musicians..
Around here, string band members are notorious for being plastered before a 2 hour rehersal is over. When my military band plays a dance band dance at the american legion hall they rotate out on extra trumpets. A friend of mine (18) always gets first set off because "that's the way to keep the section sober longest."
One of my favorite memories is seeing a trumpet player playing a fast jazz song during an impromptu performance at a barbeque. He was wearing a hula skirt, lai, and was holding a big mug of coors. He was having fun, though.. got to give him credit. =)

I've also noticed that most successful clarinet players can spell. Guess that puts you out of the running, HS STUDENT! (this guy loves posting trolls).

If you have a look at most professional wind players, especially the more powerful orchestral players you will notice that the majority are quite robust. In order to produce the contemporary volumes you need to have a fair bit of strength behind you. A serious answer.
Most clarinettists and other wind players are just ' Piss-pots' (sorry I'm Australian) and enjoy Beer wine and fine dining. Hell we can afford it cant we?

I'd have to agree with the second Mark, actually. I know a lot of clarinetist and doublers of different ages and sizes. It seems as though the older ones are all fuller size-wise, but they're all very talented when it comes to most, if not all, wind instruments.
(sorry for my getting off topic before -- the question just made me think of some experiences -- they were almost relevant.)

Mark Pinner wrote "In order to produce the contemporary volumes you need to have a fair bit of strength behind you."
In my experience "strength" has little corelation with beer pots.
And I would expect a lot of fat over the abdominal muscles and internal organs to interfere with the breathing mechanism. But then looking at the great singers, I would have to say my thinking is warped!
i'm slim. Is that why I'm not a great clarinet player?

During a tour of Japan, I stayed at the same hotel as a famous American orchestra who had a VERY fat principal clarinet. It was a very big hotel with a massive breakfast meny. When the clarinet player came down for breakfast and sat down with his colleagues, one of them said to him: "So, what are you having for breakfast, first page as usual".

This is the most absurd thing I have ever heard. Good solid air support doesn't come from being fat.

Size of the clarinet player makes no difference to the playing... It is the way that the clarinet player uses his/her self that is imporant to their playing.
