Dear all,
The Debussy Premier Rhapsodie was written in 1909/1910 for Mimart. Does anyone know what instrument Mimart played at the time? An international soloist from France told me he tried a clarinet from that period and found the Premier Rhapsodie easier on that old instrument.

This is new to me! Can't wait to hear the answer. I always thought it was for Bb only. It's not that hard of a piece until the last page. Of course we all know that!

It was written for the Bb clarinet. I just wonder what kind of instrument (Buffet?) Debussy had in mind (whatever Prosper Mimart and his students played). I suppose the mouthpieces back then were somewhat different too.
The first three notes alone look scary enough to me that I doubt I will ever attempt them piece ^_^

Well . . . it was dedicated to Mimart, and he may have had Mimart in mind, but it was written for that year's clarinet final exam at the Conservatoire as a duty upon being named to the Board of Directors. Sometimes, good things fall out of a bureaucracy.
