 Help with jazz solo
Author: ConcerningHobbits

So for my schools musical, The Boy Friend, I have to play a solo in one of the songs, The Riviera, near the end. You can find it on youtube easily. However, in the recordings it sounds different than the written music, and I was wondering if anyone could listen to it and give me any tips on making it sound better. From what I hear some of the notes written out don't even sound like the right notes, and entering it into a sheet music website to listen to it gave different sounding rhythms. Thanks!

I tried to add this picture but it doesn't seem to have worked.

*edit* still not working, if anyone could help me with that as well that'd be appreciated.

Looks to be fairly straightforward. Could you persuade the director to let you improvise a lick at this point?

It is not uncommon that the orchestration and, for reed players in particular, the instrumentation change for a specific production of a musical. If a show has been around a while, there may be several orchestrations: original Broadway, London, tour, revival...

I have never played that show, but according to Bret Pimentel's site, The Boyfriend has at least two versions. In one the reed books are 1. alto sax/clar 2. alto sax/clar 3. tenor sax/clar 4. tenor sax/clar. The other is 1. clar/soprano sax/alto sax 2. clar/soprano sax/alto sax/bari sax 3. clar/bass clar/soprano sax/tenor sax/bass sax. (Another show calling for three soprano saxes! Thoroughly Modern Millie and Chicago come to mind. Are there others?)

This could explain the discrepancy between what is in your book and what you are hearing on the recording.
