Off-the-beaten-track trios for clar., cello, piano; any suggestions?
Author: ruben

Dear Friends,
If you have any suggestions for this combination, besides the standard repertory, all of which I have played, I would be very grateful for them. It would have to be a substantial piece lasting more than ten minutes. I/we have already played the Rota, Paul Juon, and a few other rarities. Thank you.

I'm a fan of Zemlinsky but you've probably already played that....
How about the trio by Anthony Ritchie?

also John Psathas....

(for the Psathas there is a recording online)

Magnus Lindberg has a really good one. The Hurlstone G minor for clarinet, bassoon, and piano works extremely well with cello, and the Faure piano trio op. 120 works quite well with clarinet. You've probably done it, but the Seven Balkan Dances is a treat!

A lot of contemporary ones if they are not too difficult for you...

e.g. Toshio Hosokawa, Helmut Lachenmann, Wolfgang Rihm, Jörg Widmann, Isang Yun, John Cage, Franco Donatoni...

I love the trios by Rick Sowash. He wrote thirteen but I really like his first three.
You can even download his music and recordings for free by visiting his website.

Klose,
Thank you! Not too difficult, if we put our minds (and time) to it. But, too avant-garde for our audiences (or for us, for that matter!)

Dear Dorje,
Thank you! I've played the Fauré. Actually, he intended to write the trio for clarinet rather than violin, but if I remember right, his publisher talked him out of it. I find the first and second movement work fine; the third, not so well. I'd be interested in having your opinion.

You might find something at Sheet Music Plus <www.sheetmusicplus.com> by doing a search for clarinet cello piano trio. Looks like there are a fair number of pieces there.

Yes! Rick has composed some really fine trios of this sort. Accessible, but sophisticated.

Carl Fruhling's trio for that combination is a late Romantic gem. It's become a bit less obscure since Michael Collins recorded it, but most audiences have never heard it.

try finding TRIO MINIATURES by russian born swiss composer paul juon.
arranged like max bruch cl. cello pa. violin(or clarinet), cello(or viola), piano. very romantic like bruch. 3 short movements-great for encore pieces.

Ruben,

Faure - both the second and third movements aren't that easy for the players to get the phrasing and style, and if they don't get it, the audience won't either. Wouldn't blame Faure for that, though!

The two NZ pieces I mentioned (Anthony Ritchie and John Psathas) are quite conservative in style (for living composers). Psathas wrote a big piece for the Olympic opening ceremony some years back- so he knows how to please a crowd.... And the Anthony Ritchie piece is quite harmonious.

Robert Starer Trio. It's only 8$ on SheetMusic+. One movement with contrasting sections, vaguely Schoenbergian.
Husa Evocations doesn't have piano. (BTW, Husa died recently. I don't think anyone mentioned his passing).
