Have any of you had experience buying a used clarinet in Paris? If so, could you recommend a particular store to me where I might find a used A clarinet?

Roxann: I have lived most of my life in Paris, so I know them all. As I'm vaguely connected to several of them, I cannot come out for one in particular. Don't hesitate to get in touch with me at my personal e-mail address. That said, there are two shops on the Rue de Rome near the St. Lazare railway station: Feeling Musique and Vincent Genod. Both are very reliable and reasonably priced with good guarantees and after-sales service. There is also the repairman-an extraordinary one-Cyril Mercadier (spelling? not sure) in the same neighborhood that sometimes has used instruments in stock. Good luck and hope to hear from you!

I remember a woodwind repair shop on Rue Charlot during one of my strolls - window full of vintage instruments.

The shop still exists (rue Charlot in the heart of the Marais district). You can find things there you wouldn't find anywhere else; at a price, though. Don't expect bargains. The owner-Guy Colin-is rather on the eccentric side, to put it nicely.

I spent a lot of time chatting to Guy Collins. I walked into his workshop, having just spotted it from the street, and he was the most charming and accommodating gentleman. We chatted about Couesnon instruments mainly, and he has an amazing collection. He even has one with the Dupaquier System. This is a C melody tenor keyed to 3 octaves, G to G. It was available in 1912.

The man has a real passion for instruments. He is also one of the few people that is actually capable of building a clarinet or a flute; not just repairing it.
