Hello,
I want to replace the mouthpiece that came with my Yamaha YCL 255 (Yamaha C4). I wonder if anyone can tell me from their own experience about the advantages/disadvantages of a profile 88 vanDoren mouthpiece? Of course I have read what the difference is from a design point of view, but I find it difficult to imagine if it would benefit me or not. I would have to travel quit a bit to visit a store that stocks them, so I can't just go and try one out. I am an adult beginner (have been playing for a little under a year).

PS I live in Europe so tips about online retailers that alow you to try out a mouthpiece before buying probably won't be of any use to me.

I bought a Profile 88 B46 when they were first launched and the shallower angled beak allows for holding the clarinet more horizontal compared to the standard beak. If you prefer to play with the clarinet held outwards instead of downwards, then they should suit you.
The facings and chambers are the same as their standard models. If you can try them out on approval via mail order, then get as many as possible and compare them all. Make sure they either have a mouthpiece patch stuck to the beak so you won't mark them with your teeth - if not, then stick a piece of insulating tape (one or two layers) on the beak to protect it.

Imo there is not that much of a difference. When I buy a new Vandoren mouthpiece I choose the 88 because I think it is more comfortable to play. But I doubt this is really so. You could go to a shop like Harry Bakker in Muiderberg or Terpstra in Lijnden to try out some Vandoren mouthpieces. There are a lot of different models...

Jeroen, Harry Bakker only seems to stock the most popular models (at least according to their website). Other shops are further away, I don't have a car, but I probably would need to pick a day to visit one to try a for myself.

If you are getting a profile 88, be careful that you don't get a vandoren mouthpiece that is both profile 88 AND series 13. Those mouthpieces tune to A=440, which is great for us American players but may not work so well for you in Europe. They do make vandoren mouthpieces that are profile 88 and tune to 442, but they will not have the series 13 marking on them. Happy shopping!

Encourages more MP inserted, which frees up the reed vibration and brings the tip of the reed (for most people) closer to the tip of the tongue.
I played a Morgan for many years in an pro intermittent orchestra and it had a "duckbill" beak ... I think an RM110 ... facing warped and I stopped using it and played something else, maybe an early Hawkins ... I think I just wore the Morgan out ...
