Ah yes! How's it play? I got to play a number this spring: well-made horns.

I need an outdoor clarinet, but my plastic Yamaha 250, with its 65mm stock barrel, plays awfully sharp throughout the register. I am considering getting either to get a longer synthetic barrel(probably by Behn or Fobes), or I'd just give the Ridenour horns a shot.

Yes, well-made horns. Very reasonable price. Because the hybrid clarinet has a German bore (14.8mm and the bore widens out at the bottom of the lower joint), you may need a few days to get use to it. But once you get use to it, it is really wonderful.

Ridenour Lyrique 576bc for outdoor gigs and as a backup, as well as a 65mm Behn hourglass barrel for my A. I'd say I made out pretty well this year

I got a new (to me) Wiseman Bass Clarinet Case Type A case! I also may be getting an alto flute by the new year!
(I'm still learning how to put the soprano clarinets in the Wiseman case lol)

I got a vintage set of Leblanc LL's. They are getting new pads and cork but should be ready to start breaking in a week or so. The A looks like it saw very little use. They are early (both 16xxx's) but in really fine shape. I love the older Leblanc keywork. I play my Symphony 3 almost as much as RC. I also have a really fine L7 and a Rapsodie. Those things can be such a steal. I recently saw a E11 in A advertised for $700 more than my set of LL's cost.

I didn't get a new one, but I finished restoring a Pustophon that I mentioned on here a few months back. I took it out for its first public airing yesterday to the Australian Jazz Convention at Ballarat and it was superb, a joy to play. My Christmas present to myself.

Along the lines of Tony F, I didn't buy anything for myself, but I built a 'new' horn. After several years of gathering Kohlert bass clarinet parts (separate upper and lower joints with some keys missing; a neck; a bell; and eventually all the missing keys), I put together a really nice bass clarinet, using every trick I know to make it play better than the stock horns. It might just be the best-playing bass clarinet I've ever had. A fine end to an otherwise crummy year!
By the way, happy new year everyone, may 2017 be orders of magnitude better than 2016
