 Oehler barrel

I recently acquired a superb Oehler Bb clarinet. After repadding and recorking it plays extremely well. At A442 it tunes beautifully, but not so well at A440. The barrel is the German style, with a longer upper joint tenon than the Boehm types, and with the barrel pulled about 3mm I can improve the A440 tuning, but it isn't as good as at A442 with the barrel pushed right in. The upper joint tenon depth is 22.36mm as opposed to 19mm on a Boehm barrel. I'd like to get the instrument to tune well at 440. Do you think that this could best be done with a longer barrel, or by reaming the existing barrel, or perhaps not at all?.

Most recent Oehler instruments, e.g., Wurlitzer or LK, can be tuned from 440 to 444 by using 3 types of barrels with different lengths. At least on my instrument this is not a problem at all and I use P&S barrel. Which brand is your instrument?

Thanks for your response. It's a Pustophon, purchased from a seller in Switzerland. In really excellent condition. The overall barrel length is 54mm.

I made a 59mm barrel for my Yamaha Oehler to help bring the pitch down - the stock barrels are 54mm and 56mm which is the typical length for modern Oehler/German systems.

You can buy aftermarket Oehler/German barrels that are 58mm to 60mm - Uebel and other German makers offer longer length barrels.

Thanks Chris, I'll look into it.

You could try to fill the gap between barrel and upper joint with a tuning ring. Check intonation then. May be you should pull the middle joint also.
