 Thoughts on Buffet R13 Vintage
Author: GenEric

Hey! What do you guys think about the Buffet R13 Vintage? (not old clarients, the r13 model called vintage) I'm thinking about getting one. What are your opinions on it?

Check the intonation very well. If you need to, get help on that from another player with a really good sense of pitch. The Vintage model could be inconsistent in tuning. The Yamaha CSVR is more likely to have the better tuning. It would be great if you could compare the Vintage with the CSVR, side by side, especially for tuning.

The Vintage plays like an original R13 from the 1950s or early 60s. I tried one when the model came out and had an intense recollection of how my first R13, from 1960, played. For me, those clarinets had an intimate connection with my breath, with a very "personal" sound.

They had intonation problems that were corrected in the 1970s, and my current instruments date from the mid 70s. They are very good, particularly for orchestral work, but I still miss my 1960, which alas was spoiled by a well-known but incompetent repairman.

You owe it to yourself to try a Vintage to find out whether it suits your way of blowing, and whether you can play it in tune.

The intonation was horrible. But I only played 2. There were also some dead notes meaning that some notes didn't speak well at all and then the next note in the scale would pop out, so undercutting the dead notes would be a must.

As for the sound quality go with the newer R13's or get the Yamaha's CSVR's or the CSG's.
