Mr. Nilsson's advice is good.

Also I look at how quickly the needle goes down. If it gets down to 1 very slowly it may not play well. This will also vary depending on how the machine is set up, so it is learned over time. If it goes down and then blows a pad open, it may or may not be a problem.

I plug the open holes so that I can close the ring keys with very light pressure.

Thank you all for the helpful answers. What should be the open pressure in order to take Mr. Nilsson’s advice as a reference?

Rgoldem: JL Smith's MAG (whose values I refer to) should be calibrated to show 8 (inches of water) while open.

Has everything to do with Clarinet as that checks the seal of the instrument.

Pads, and if there were a crack also that went through the body.

I used to use one to test oboes but soon found I didn't need to rely on them after a while. If I bought one, chances are it'll just be collecting dust.

But they are a useful tool for anyone that wants one to check their work.
