 right hand trouble

Hi Everyone,

So for the past week and a half, my right hand has been locking up on me (particularly my pinky and ring finger, esp. the pinky). I've been wearing a neck strap and just trying to push through it for the most part, but I've noticed that it's really inhibiting my ability to navigate the music and I can't seem to get that hand to relax. I've tried heat, cold, messaging my hand, upping my calcium intake (read somewhere on the internet that that helps), and drinking more water, but nothing seems to be working. Today, however, it go so bad that I can't move my pinky and it keeps twitching and hurts to try and bend it. I don't know what else I can do to get this better ASAP. If anyone knows anything that might help, that would be amazing and much appreciated!

Thank you.

~Sara

There's a company Silver Ring Splint Co. here in Charlottesville VA which makes a fixture (two rings welded together at right angles) that may solve your problem. A therapist who deals with such hand problems can measure your fingers and prescribe the proper size. Cost for the fixture is ~$100/finger, not covered by Medicare.

See your primary care physician for a suggestion (and a referral if your insurance requires it) of either a neurologist or an orthopedist (depending on your doc's assessment) to check this out. Experimenting with self diagnosis and self-treatment may, if you're lucky, succeed, but it can also just extend your discomfort. Some of the things you try on your own may aggravate it.

Either an entrapped tendon or an impinged (pinched) nerve are two possible causes, but no one can really diagnose this without examining you. The good news is that such problems are not very difficult to treat once the exact cause is known.
