A friend and I are performing this with band accompainment and we were asked to present information about this piece, Mendelsohnn in regards to this piece, and Harry Gee, the transcriber of this piece. i don't know much about it myself, but I have two suggestions. First, I can ask my teacher if you want. Her performance of this piece is considered to be the best ever, so her input might help. ALso, there are a lot of bad (I mean really bad) recrdings of this piece out there, and they all include l;ner notes, the source of numerous anecdotes. -Dylan

Now for a nice piece of historical trivia. Mendelsohnn was a party-animal. He liked to invite people home for nice food, nice drinks and nice music. Amongst his friends were the Braemann (father and son, especially the son). Braemann Son was a fabulous apple strudel cook. So, the story goes that these concertos for two clarinets were composed in exchange for apple strudels: while the clarinetist cook was preparing delicious strudels, Mendelsohn composed these concertos. The strudels and the concertos were put to immediate use in the privacy of Mendelsohn's house, with Mendelsohnn at the piano (the piano reduction appeared first...). They were orchestratd a little bit later.
Do not look for too much depth in these concertos. Remember thes strudels. Have fun!

Somebody might say: How could all these notes be put down on paper in such a short time frame. We do not realize how skilled these giants were. The fact is, not all the notes needed to be put down. Many of the segments were simply left out because the "musical language" was well understood by all, or because it was expected that the musicians would improvize. Yeap! What was going on in Medndelshonn's house was more akin to a good ol' fashion jam session than to a formal chamber music concert. This is also why finding a URTEXT edition is often so difficult. Often times, the composer never bothered writing everyting down because his network of virtuoso associates could figure everything out with minimal score - like a good jazz combo today.
If Mozart, Mendelshonn, Chopin, etc. were alive today, they would be jazzmen no doubt.

One warning about the Hary Gee transcription of the concert piece:
Through, i believe, all of the second movement, and most of the third movement, the two clarinet parts are playing the wrong parts. I believe they trade off parts in the first movements too. Why he re-distributed the 1st and 2nd solo clarinet parts, i'll never understand.
Make sure you perform it with you and the other solo part reading from real parts like IMC or something, not the Hary Gee transcription. I performed this several months ago and we tookone look at the parts just to get the rehearsal letters marked and gave them back and read from my parts... they were a joke.
