 E-11 age

Does anyone know a ballpark year of manufacture for an E-11 s.n. 845453? It doesn't come up on Buffet's Serial Number Lookup page. It's a German-made E-11, looks like a hard rubber body and has an adjustable thumbrest. I'd be curious to know its original price (again, ballpark).

No, I'm not trying to sell it.

Thanks,
Karl

E-11's are wood, not hard rubber.
I own an E-11, s/n 853xxx. It was purchased new in 2002 or 2003. I paid $350-$375, online. List price at the time was in the $700 range. At that time, R13's were approximately $1700, new. Inflation...

Thanks, Paul.

This has an incredibly smooth, glossy surface for wood with no apparent grain, especially for a lower-level instrument that probably didn't get much if any hand finishing. Were the German E-11s also all wood? Was yours made in Germany or in France?

Germany. All were wood as far as I know. Are you sure its an E11?

Says so in the front right under the Buffet logo.

My wooden E11 is German made (Schreiber) and was purchased in 2007. S/N 982302.

My E11 was painted a glossy black on the exterior which hid the grain when new, but after 9 years of handling and usage, it is obviously wood :)

Why would they do that? Why hide the wood? I guess that's what was done to the one I'm asking about. Seems counter-productive from a marketing standpoint. So, given your serial # and Paul's I guess this one is from roughly 2000 or 2001?

What, out of curiosity, was the retail price when it was new in 2007?

Karl,

I can't comment on the marketing considerations. However, you are not the first person to think it is plastic:

I don't remember the exact price, but I paid in the neighborhood of US $1300 from a well-known dealer in the USA. Some customization was included (e.g. some upgraded pads).

Yes, they were stained (painted?) and varnished. But definitely wood not plastic.
