 Uebel Emperior Bass Price Hike...
Author: Chris P
Date:   2016-10-10 12:23

I can't believe how much the cost of the Uebel Emperior bass has rocketed within the last month or so. They're now more expensive than the Buffet Prestige, so the days of getting a bargain price pro level low C bass are long gone.

Here's how they now fit in the general scheme of things in descending price order (current prices from Howarth's site):

Selmer Privilege - £9320.00
Buffet Tosca - £8606.00
Uebel Emperior - £7645.00
Buffet Prestige - £7299.00
Yamaha YCL-622II - £6607.00

Compare the current prices to what they were around this time back in 2013 (in descending price hike order):

Uebel Emperior - £5995.00 (now £7645.00 - an increase of £1650)
Selmer Privilege - £8230.00 (now £9320.00 - an increase of £1090)
Buffet Prestige - £6924.00 (now £7299.00 - an increase of £375)
Yamaha YCL-622II - £6353.00 (now £6607.00 - an increase of £254)

So the Uebel has had the most drastic price hike out of all the other pro level basses.

I imagine this increase would have something to do with the referendum result and the value of the pound being very low.

Some smaller places have yet to adjust their price such as Dawkes and Just Flutes.

At Thomann (Germany), the Uebel Emperior price went up some 20% around the beginning of this year. It seems to me that the Yamaha and Buffet prices aren't adapted yet to current exchange rates, they're currently well worth a trip on the Eurostar. That would not have been the case some months ago.

On Thomann's German site they're currently listed at €7898.00 (which is £7098.00), but available to UK buyers at €7599.00 which is £6841.55 at today's exchange rate.

The lowest price they were on offer in the UK just a couple or so months back was around the £4500 mark - that's now ancient history.

It doesn't appear the prices have increased at all in the US.

Hmm, I paid €5285.71 in 2013, now it's €6636.97 for us Swiss folks.

Wow. What a lucky man I am. :-)

Tictactux- there's a common theme: you Swiss had your big currency devaluation in early 2015. Now we Brits are discovering what it feels like!

I've just seen the current full retail price of the Uebel Emperior isn't all that short of £8310!

John Packer currently has them listed at £6982.42
Dawkes/Windcraft has them listed at £6070

Actually, these are Thomann's normal Euro prices - we just get VAT decucted (and pay it again upon import, so add ~10% for the "shipped" price). Has nothing to do with currency devaluation or Brexit-like symptoms or so.

(Actually I don't think the Brexit will change much in financial terms, but there'll surely be a lot of addl. work behind the scenes. Don't make the Brexit the #1 reason for all that is happening now).

With all this info, prices over there appear to be less than what we pay in the US.

I checked the Howarth website again, and was surprised to find the price of the Uebel Emperior Bass to be lower once again. The Emperior now costs £6980 GBP, marginally more than the Yamaha 662-ii at £6970 and considerably less than the Buffet Prestige at £7177.

Here is the link:

In other news, the price of the Selmer Privilege bass seemed to have risen again, surpassing that of the Buffet Tosca bass!

Regarding US prices, they should go down as the dollar buys a lot more euro and piunds these days. Many other European goods are cheaper now here in the US

And after a four year gap, I've just checked the UK prices of pro level low C basses and the Uebel is currently the most expensive one listed on Howarth's site - even more expensive than the Selmer and Buffet Tosca basses.

Uebel Emperior - £11,270.00
Buffet Tosca - £10,220.00
Selmer Privilege - £9605.00
Buffet Prestige - £8670.00
Yamaha YCL-622II - £7600.00

It varies a bit. Thomann has the Uebel below the Selmer and both Buffets, which are the most expensive there. Dawkes has it below the Tosca. Not sure why it's that different in different stores in the same country.

It seem that Uebel used the old and common method of starting with (very) low prices, increasing them once they are in the market.

Here's Dawkes' prices in descending order (Howarth's prices in brackets):

Buffet Tosca - £11,146.00 (£10,220.00)
Uebel Emperior - £10,023.00 (£11,270.00)
Selmer Privilege - £9629.00 (£9605.00)
Buffet Prestige - £8940.00/£8225.00 (£8670.00)
Yamaha YCL-622II - £7558.00 (£7600.00)

Thomann's prices of pro level low C basses are considerably lower, but that doesn't include 20% VAT, import duty and handling fees (price including 20% VAT in brackets)

Selmer Privilege (all black) - £9199.00 (£11,038.80)
Buffet Tosca - £8333.00 (£9999.60)
Buffet Prestige - £7699.00 (£9238.80)
Selmer Privilege (silver plated keys and fittings) - £7333.00 (£8799.60)
Uebel Emperior - £7180.00 (£9238.80)
Buffet Prestige convertible low D/C - £6999.00 (£8398.80)
Buffet Prestige Greenline convertible low D/C - £6599.00 (£7918.80)
Yamaha YCL-622II - £6088.00 (£7305.60)

These European prices are outrageously lower than we pay in the US. That Selmer is over $15,000 USD at Kessler Music in the US and that's before any relevant sales tax. The European price from Thomann is $10,490. Sure you'd have to pay US import duties on the way in, but that would still be under $11k for the Selmer.

For what it costs to buy a Selmer in the US, I could buy a Selmer in Europe, take a nice European vacation, and still save money!

I was just looking at the prices last week to write a review about the new Royal Global basses. I couldn't believe that the Uebels have doubled in price so quickly. Being cheaper was their selling point. They're pretty good, but not better than a Prestige.

Now that Reed and Squeak is distributing the Royals in the UK, you can add them to your list Chris:
Polaris £4950
Firebird £6450

@Max S-D
Yes, it's a huge difference. I often recommend people come to europe to buy their clarinet. worst case, you pay about the same but end up with a vacation. best case, you still get the vacation and even save money.

The Royal Global basses look largely based on Buffet Prestige basses besides the side/trill keys. As far as wooden low C basses go, those prices are incredibly low.
Are they made by the same company that makes Uebel's instruments?
