Apologies if this is already commonly known - I wasn't aware of it. Marcellus in live performance of the Debussy Premiere Rhapsody.

I'm a poor judge of this music. I like some parts of the performance, but am uncomfortable with other parts. Hesitantly saying, I hear intonation difficulties near the beginning.
The caveat is because sometimes I think I hear intonation problems in professional studio commercial recordings of famous players, and that can't be. Yet I cheerfully filter out intonation troubles in my own playing, while Mr. Fridge and Mr. Stove just sit there smiling at me. (Ms. Sink chuckles from time to time, but who knows what she's going on about.)
Quite a few recordings of famous players appearing lately on YouTube - Wright, Leister, now Marcellus.

Philip, you're kidding, aren't you? Unlike pop/rock recordings, classical recordings even now, certainly then, aren't heavily doctored in sound editors to correct pitch. They're much more What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get (WYSISYG). You're hearing a human doing his best to make music using an imperfect tool in real time.

It helps me continue and not feel as bad in the practice room. I say to myself, "Even _____ squeaks every now and then." I worry a lot less now about that squeak every now and then.

I have an "open reel" tape of this that was recorded live, off the air, by my old (now deceased) clarinet teacher. Was the first time I heard the Debussy ... I though Robert did an outstanding job!

Often, hearing an intonation lapse or some other error in a performance makes me appreciate the playing even more, because the little goof is evidence that I'm hearing the real deal, not a miracle of modern engineering.
