Just a curious question. Yesterday I found an older wood clarinet at a local thrift store. There are no markings or serial numbers anywhere on the instrument. It was in an Artley case, but it may not be the original case. The instrument doesn't look too worn so I don't think the logo has worn off. Was this a common practice to make unmarked instruments?
Just curious.

Plastic Artleys can have a wood grain finish. Look inside the bore to see if is wood. Artleys loose their logo. The last place it disappears is usually the bell.

Can you post a photo of it on here as that will help to identify it.

I went back to the thrift store with better glasses (doubled up reading glasses) and there was a very faint logo stamped in the bell and on the barrel: Jean Marbeau, Paris, LP, B on the barrel, and Jean Marbeau, Paris, Horsconsours, 1873-1889-190(2)? + some signatures and logos that were unreadable on the bell. I looked on the internet and the Clarinet pages site had good things to say about Jean Marbeau clarinets. I figured for $35, it might be a good candidate for rehab so I bought it. If nothing else the color of the wood is worth rehabbing just for the grain pattern. Photos to follow.

Sounds as though you did well to go back to the store with better glasses! It's always worth looking closely at instruments in those good, strong, modern cases made for student clarinets. Antique and vintage clarinets often came in leather pouchettes that deteriorated or simply disappeared over the years. Once when I was dumpster-diving at a flea market's closing time, I found an empty Bundy case in excellent condition. It's now the home of a vintage clarinet that I bought "naked" at a different flea market.
