I saw older posts about the RICO Reserve mouthpieces I just purchased a mouthpiece that said that it was a D'Adderio Reserve mouthpiece I purchased this on eBay for $47 but on a close look at the Box it said that it was a Rico Reserve model X5 yet when I saw the picture of the mouthpiece it had the marking of the D'Adderio. I have a feeling that it is actually a Rico Reserve mouthpiece I was wondering if anyone knew if the RICO Reserve is decent and also iPlay with a 3 and a half reed. I think the mouthpiece is the medium facing or whatever that is called so I was wondering if anyone used the RICO Reserve with that thickness of reed? And also does the D'Addario have anything to do with the RICO Reserve thanks so much and PS is this a student mouthpiece or could it be used for more advanced players?

D'Addario owns Rico. When they bought it, they replaced the top line of reeds (the Rico Reserves and Reserve Classics) with newly designed D'Addario Reserve and Reserve Classics. They kept the Rico name for their student reeds. They're still sold on Weiner Music's website as Rico Reserve, but D'Addario is mentioned in the description. Woodwind & Brasswind sells them as D'Addario Reserve mouthpieces and the box has been redesigned with the new name. I don't know if the design was changed with the name.
The bottom line is that Rico and D'Addario are the same company. The X5 (1.05 mm) is a medium open tip. They're available in X0 (1.00 mm) and X10 (1.10 mm) as well.

A stock Rico Reserve X5 is the mouthpiece that I used (on soprano) to audition for my current job. Still playing it. They are very consistent. Different strokes and all, but it shouldn't hold you back. : )

Played X5 for a few days, off and on. Many redeeming features. Didn't have the depth of sound I was looking for but was definitely a very good MP. I think I am gonna try an X0 and see what happens ... especially with Legere's latest offerings.
The thing about equipment preference is that you change as you age, get better or worse playing skills, your hearing changes or concept of sound changes. So, last years "not quite what I am looking for" equipment is next years "where have you been all my life!" upgrade.

As was mentioned a few places above, I can confirm that the Reserve X5 model of mouthpiece is the same whether it says Rico or D'Addario on the box, and whether it has the "R" for Reserve or the white D'Addario logo on the actual mouthpiece. The design wasn't changed at all during the rebranding a few years ago, so all X5s to date have the same specifications.

I'm using an X5 with a Legere 3.25 Euro Signature to play Chorus Line at the Stratford Festival this season. Great response with this combo.

I bought an X5 when they first came out. I found it a bit too resistant, but when I reduced the width of the tip rail by half it became much more responsive and less resistant.

I've had a number of private students play the X0's, X5's, and X10's, and found them all very consistent. It sure made things easier to not have to try 5-10 of them to figure out a baseline of comparison!

Gonna have to revisit the Reserve in a closer facing. I really liked the response of the X5, just not enough depth for me ... at the time.
You know, we are blessed with such a vast array of amazing stuff nowadays, it is hard to decide ...
As an example, just revisited the M13-lyre ... local music store had a bunch and I went thru ALL of them! Bought one and I like it, especially with V21s. Wide tip rail. Warm, covered and surprisingly resistant. Certainly more resistant then the X5.
So, I am not the same player now as I was 2 years ago ... tastes, concept of sound, lips, lungs, hearing changes. Keep your old MPs, they may be next years marvel. I wish I had not liquidated my collection a few years ago ...
