As a matter of curiosity, how many calories does one burn up practicing the clarinet intensely non-stop, per hour? After my daily hour- and- a- half practice session, I feel as though I've done 30 kilometers on my bike. I have never tried doing both at the same time though!

The idea of practicing as a workout brings up an interesting thought: Has anyone tried wearing finger weights during practice to build up one's finger muscles?

I doubt wearing finger weights would be productive. Weight resistance tends to increase strength; strength isn't really the issue. Would it increase stamina? - don't know.
Marching or walking while playing seems like good cardiovascular exercise. Sometimes I'll drill scales or memorization while walking around a circuit of rooms in my house. (I often read while walking that circuit, so my feet have it pretty well "memorized".)

I used to practise circular breathing while walking up and down a hallway.... I've often wondered about playing scales while on an exercise bike...

How many calories ? All depends what you're playing. Mozart would burn only a fraction of calories than if you were (trying) to play Nielsen.

It depends on how many adjustments you make to the reeds! Or if you get angry at the reeds and break them, throw them across the room, swear, you surely burn more calories!

A lot probably depends on whether you sit or stand.

Probably also depends on how "efficient" your playing is.
As a player who for 60 odd years has been doing it all wrong all along I can easily work up a sweat after one hours practice whilst the pros just breeze through the most difficult music.

20 calories per hour sounds totally wrong. That would be the equivalent of walking two flights of stairs.

No, there is no empirical evidence, suggesting an advantage.
Perhaps Neil can present us with his research?

I have not done any research. I have not tried it myself. I asked the question to see if anyone else had tried it.

David: That sounds right to me, and that's what an MD told me. It's not moving fingers or standing or sitting that burn the calories: it's blowing and using all those big abdominal and back muscles.
