Low C bass for SF/Bay area concert

I am trying to assist organizers for the World Doctors Orchestra, performing in October at the SF Conservatory, Mahler I. The guy covering bass is coming from Norway, and is seeking a borrowed or rented low C bass. It would be needed for the dates 10/5 through 10/9. Any and all leads would be most appreciated.

A low C bass clarinet isn't needed for Mahler I.

The lowest note in the part is bottom F.

Requesting the low C is probably a guarantor of quality.

Dr. Bass for Mahler 1st will need bass, Eb, C, and A clarinets. As mentioned above, extended range is not needed for the bass.

... and a Bb clarinet, so a total of five clarinets for the 3rd clarinet part.

Chris P: No Bb clarinet in the 3rd book -- "only" four instruments are needed.

Oh yeah - if you're only playing the 3rd clarinet part and not having to cover both 3rd and 4th like I was expected to do last time I played this. What a bloody nightmare that was having to juggle both books and all those clarinets unnecessarily!

The stupid thing is I borrowed a C clarinet from a local player to do this and on the day of the concert, he wasn't doing anything that entire day and could've been there playing either the 3rd or 4th part.

But the principal at the time (he's no longer there after some disagreement) didn't do his research when booking extra players and the conductor wasn't happy that either the bass or Eb was missing at any given time in the slow movement as I couldn't play both at the same time.

It's not a case of 'which one would you prefer me to play?' as both parts are important - so if anyone's booking players for this, book the right amount of players as you need all four there.

If a low C bass can't be found, then an older Selmer (Q series, Series 9, etc.)or Leblanc low Eb bass will be fine provided they're in top playing condition. The old Selmers are very nice basses.

I've managed to play Gus' First with three different orchestras on humble Kohlert bass clarinets (first two occasions) and the mighty ex-Hochstrasser Uebel Oehler-system bass most recently. We don't need no stinkin' Selmers or Leblancs!

Thanks all for the helpful responses. From my Seattle home, I could ship my low Eb bass to the SF organizer, but of course would prefer not to. Besides the Clark Fobes suggestion, any other ideas on borrowing/renting a bass in the SF/Bay area? Thanks so much!

Dave
