Are there any amateur musicians' networks or amateur clarinetists' networks on the Internet? I've been searching but have found anything yet. I created two Facebook groups (Amateur Clarinetists and Amateur Musicians) to see if I can find other amateur musicians.

I'm a professional honey bee researcher. I have no problems finding colleagues around the world. But when it comes to finding amateur musicians to play music with I come up empty. I would enjoy hearing from other clarinetists, flutists, oboists, bassoonists, violinists, cellists, or pianists. Perhaps even some one who is looking to play some classical pieces and live near Frankfort, KY.

Thanks Marty

I am in Oregon, so not much help. I am so very amateur! I play in a horseback band, a youth symphony, and I have a few friends that come to my house to play. I also wish I could play more. I hate to practice (bad, bad, bad me), especially if I have no "reason" to.

I am a member of clarinetpages.net. It is more for collectors and repair, but all of us play, too.

I don't mind practicing, though, I wish I had more time to play music and not just, scale, arpeggios, and etudes. Though, I have to admit, Baermann and Rose Etudes are rather enjoyable.

I'm not sure how far you are from Lexington, but there is a concert band there. If you're not close enough to be involved with them, they might have information for groups in your area.

The Associated Chamber Music Players (http://www.acmp.net/index.php) has a membership directory you can (if you're a member yourself) search by location. I've located people and gotten into some decent playing this way. There are also some nifty workshops for adults, if you don't mind, well, paying for it occasionally. You do have to deal with the problem that about 30% of the adult population of the country plays clarinet and most of them are good, however.

For list of concert bands and orchestras, (but not individual members), look here:

Twice, I've listed in the ACMP, but never got a call to play music!

Good to know. I've been considering joining ACMP.

Marty - let me know if you find an Internet amateur clarinet network. I'd love to join.

My husband belongs to Piano World, which has a number of piano forums. He hangs out in the Adult Beginner (which includes those who have returned to piano after a long lay-off). They have quarterly online recitals, which members upload and then others can listen to and add comments. I would absolutely love to participate in something like that.

By the way, I joined the Association of Chamber Music Players a few years back but found it unrewarding. I remember getting a list of local musicians who were also in the network, but I live in Atlanta, which is a sprawl city, and so there weren't too many musicians within my traveling distance. Plus I don't recall that they had an online forum, so it wasn't worth it to me to renew my membership.

Hi Laurie,

I couldn't find any amateur groups online so I created two:

Amateur Clarinetists (https://www.facebook.com/groups/1610954479203176/?ref=bookmarks)

Amateur Musicians (https://www.facebook.com/groups/626057267552510/?ref=bookmarks)

We already have 4 members, two from the land down under.

I really like the online recital idea. I posted my first video on Facebook a few days ago. The response is tepid. No musicians responded, just a few friends. It would be terrific if other musicians were to comment on my video.

Here's the video if you would like to comment on it. I welcome your comments (https://www.facebook.com/100008310232056/videos/1808398062780517/)

Unlike you, I live in a close knit community. It's very cliquish. If you weren't born here and raised here it's very difficult to find other musicians who want to get together to play music. Even in Louisville (50 miles away) and Lexington (30 miles away), the results are the same.

You're the second person who's posted a negative comment about CMP. I'm going to save my money and focus on getting the Amateur Clarinetist off the ground.

Please feel free to join and bring along anyone else you know who might be interested. Perhaps you could enter a bit about your background, the type of music you enjoy playing, etc.

Marty

The old-fashioned way works, too: a paper note affixed with a thumbtack to a bulletin board at the local music store.

Unfortunately, where I live there are no music stores. The closest ones are 40 to 60 miles away.

While joining the ACMP is a way to locate nearby musicians (and their instruments), it is not the only reason to join. The ACMP supports chamber musicians in a variety of ways - see http://www.acmp.net/about

I've paid my $25 dues for many years and never gotten a call from other members - but I live in the SF-Bay Area where there are many musical opportunities. And, although my phone has a dial, I've not reached out to other members so I can't lay blame on other ACMP members.

The dues that members pay help support ACMP's workshop list - a wonderful resource http://www.acmp.net/workshops

Perhaps craigslist.org is worth a shot http://www.craigslist.org/about/sites#US Look under Community -> Musicians

Hi Marty - I visited your facebook and listened to your Rose piece you recorded. I don't have the Rose etude to look at, so I can't comment per say, but I liked your tone, especially in the beginning. I see what you mean about having some problems with the "break" to the high note; maybe more breath support would help that. By the way, I'm commenting here because I don't see a comment feature on your Facebook. But I just joined so maybe there is a lag time.

Now that I think I understand better what you want in an online Internet network for clarinetists, it seems that you have a great one right here with the Clarinet board.

The only thing I wish Clarinet board had was an option to listen to and make comments on online recitals. My husband suggests I contact the administrator to see if there is interest, and resources, to do that (similar to the one on Piano World I previously mentioned.)

Personally, I am an amateur clarinetist, but I play several recitals a year, both solo and ensemble. But I'm a little hesitant about posting them on Facebook or Youtube, but I'd certainly consider posting them in a closed clarinet forum for constructive critique. From what I can see with members of this group, they are very supportive, gracious, and kind when it comes to sharing advice.

Thanks Laurie. That helps a lot. As you noted, I'm still working on the break. I participate on the Clarinet BBoard almost every day. It is a fantastic site. My purpose in creating the Amateur Clarinetists and Amateur Musicians groups was to provide a forum solely for amateur clarinetists and musicians. Of course, I would welcome professionals who are willing to share their expertise with us. I get a lot of valuable information from Clarinet BBoard. They are my "go to" site when I want to want to get questions answered about problems I'm having.
