 French Composers???
Author: Jessica

Hey, I was just wondering if anyone knows of any French composers who wrote nice clarinet solos/etudes. I'm giving a presentation on the clarinet in French for extra credit and my teacher thought it'd be cool if I could play a song for the class.

"arabesques", by paul jeanjean. i played it last year for NYSSMA. it's a level five, and it's kind of hard. there's an awesome cadenza, though. lots of fun...

In addition to the above suggestions, Premiere Rhapsodie by Claude Debussy is a great piece. Jeanjean wrote several collections of etudes which are very nice. If you want to play music that is slightly less challenging, there is Debussy's Le Petit Negre, or maybe Debussy's The Girl with the Flaxen Hair.

H. Rabaud – Solo De Concours
A. Messager – Solo De Concours
CH. M. Widor – Introduction et Rondo
H. Busser – Aragon
H. Busser – Cantegril

The Rabaud would prob be the easiest and i've never played the 2 pieces by Henri Busser but from memory they don't look too bad having sight read through them once. There are actually seemingly millions of French composers though - especially of study books (I've got about 30 or 40 ones myself and there would be about 10,000 more that I don't have(most of them all disgustingly hard)). You could try studies by Bozza, Jean Jean, Cavalini,Gabucci, Giampieri, Perier. Hope you find something suitable whether it be study or a piece.

Louis Cahuzac: "Arlequin" for clarinet solo. Not too easy and fun to play.

A familiar and easy melody line to play is that from the Ravel "Pavane for a Dead Princess" (Don't let the title scare you!) First written as a piano solo, it is a familiar (short) orchestra work. It was made into a popular song many, many years ago.

There is, or at least used to be, 2 volumes and maybe more of a series called Contemporary French Music for Clarinet and Piano.

Stubbins also put out a book of mostly French solos for clarinet and piano.

There are books of etudes by Jeanjean, Perrier, Delecluse, Lancelot and others. These are mostly published in French editions by Durand, printed on awful newsprint paper and sold at even more awful prices. Some of them are pretty good music, though probably not quite good enough to put on a concert program. Also, they tend to be technically difficult.

Best regards.
