What is the lowest note that can be played on an A clarinet? Just curious.

Concert C#/Db on a regular A clarinet - your safest bet.

Concert C natural on a full Boehm A clarinet to low Eb (viola's lowest note).

Concert A on an A basset clarinet to low C (bottom space bass clef).

Can you actually get a full Boehm (to Eb) A clarinet? I understand the market for Bb clarinets with the extra half-step - it makes transposing from A clarinet parts that go down to E possible. I don't think I've ever played an A clarinet part that went down to Eb.

Full Boehm A clarinets have been made by Buffet, Leblanc and Selmer and I expect others too - while there may not be any music written that descends to the low Eb (Concert C), it makes it useful for the player who uses the low Eb for an alternative to throat Bb on their full Boehm Bb and also makes some viola transcriptions feasible if there are low Cs in them. Or anything else that has that note and sounds best in the original key instead of being transposed up a minor 3rd or whatever from the original to be played and suit the range of a regular Bb or A clarinet.

Chris,
Every time I see your clarinets I drool. They're gorgeous.

Karl,

Stravinsky's Suite (trio) version of L'Histoire du Soldat features a written low e-flat for the A clarinet in two places, both of them in the second movement, The Soldier's Violin - the last quarter notes before rehearsal number three and rehearsal number 12. Granted, they are marked optional (in square brackets), but written there nonetheless.
