I'm totally on board with the "mouth-Peace of Mind" concept. You want the ability to find a replacement for your #1 without a struggle.
I was a bit surprised by the talk about changing up reed strengths depending on a host of different issues. This is one of those things that must vary from player to player. The recent Wenzel Fuchs post of mine has Mr. Fuchs talking about using one reed for a year (plastic of course) only to change when he accidentally closed a reed case cover upon it.
Jon's playing (and memory) is quite amazing!

Wow! Amazing playing. Astonishing. A great sales tool for Vandoren and Buffet.
Will have to check out the BD-5 ... although I like closer facing MPs. Never know until you actually try one ...
I'd like to hear Manasse live, someday ... to get my batteries charged.

I read somewhere that Jon Manasse plays double-lip but this video clearly shows he does not. I can even spot some tooth marks on his mouthpiece patch.

In the late 70s a good friend of mine competed in that youth contest in Denver which was then the pre-ICA organization. That was the first year of the two years that he won. So when I hear the name Jon Manasse I always think that was the little kid that roomed next door. He sounded like a totally different player the day before the competition versus the day of competition.
Our reeds that worked well at home were totally unplayable in Denver .. popsicle sticks! Not only that but after walking two blocks you'd be out of air.
